About the memorial: A new steel footbridge 51m. long and weighing 59Tonne.over the main London to Ramsgate railway line and adjacent the existing Blacksole bridge.The existing narrow bridge had no walkways and was therefore considered to be dangerous for pedestrians.The bridge is named in memory of a Spitfire pilot who was killed on 30 August 1942 aged 19 after bailing out and landing in trees close to Blacksole bridge.There are existing plaques in memory of the pilot Albert Hugo Friday close to the entrance to the new bridge[See WMO ref.160797]There is a perspex plaque fixed to the bridge structure at high level and at each end giving the name of the bridge and with representations of Spitfire planes.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
