About the memorial: The chapel, designed by Sir John Burnet, was built as a memorial after World War 1. It was dedicated on 4 October 1929 in memory of 775 fallen associated with the University. The names can be found on the tablets at the east end of the Chapel behind the Communion Table. After World War 2 405 further names were added to the east of the stalls. The Chapel itself is a memorial. For WW1 there are 9 black marble names tablets on the walls (names on each in 3 columns. Tablet 1- names Adam to Robert Brown Tablet 2- names Thomas Brown to Donaldson Tablet 3- names Douglas to Andrew Hay Tablet 4- names William Hay to Leitch Tablet 5- names Letters to McLagan Tablet 6- names McLaren to Moyes Tablet 7- names Muir to Rose Tablet 8- names Ross to Strang Tablet 9- names Struthers to Young then 8 extra names in no order For WW2 there are 6 stone names tablets on the walls (names on each in 3 columns), and a tablet for extras- Tablet 1- names Adam to Connell Tablet 2- names Colhoun to George Hamilton and Gillespie out of order at the end Tablet 3- names Peter Hamilton to McCallum Tablet 4- names MacFarlane to James J Mitchell and James C More Tablet 5- names William Mitchell to Edward Ian Smith and John D Smith Tablet 6- names Henry Smith to Yellowlees then 19 names out of sequence but themselves in alphabetical order Tablet 7 (extra)- In 2003 the name of Sgt Peter Doig was added to the WW2 tablets on a new supplemental tablet, which, by 2014, had an extra 6 names added.[in May 2010 had the names Peter Doig, Robert H Jack, Thomas Teviotdale, Michael J Cassidy and G O'Connell Smith, by April 2012 the name Peter S Salmond had been added, and by November 2014 the name James Dunlop had been added]. 2018-19 additional WW1 names have been identified and are to be added to the memorial in time for Remembrance Sunday 2018. Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
