About the memorial: This memorial consists of two large Portland stone halves, representing Iraq and Afghanistan, separated by a bronze medallion with armed forces in action on one side, and civilian workers on the other to recognise the service provided by both groups of people. The civilian relief shows details of educators, health workers, aid distributers, engineers, administrators and communication personnel who worked on the humanitarian effort associated with the conflicts. The rough surfaced sides to depict the rocky terrain of the countries and the words “Duty” and “Sacrifice” on each stone indicate that the memorial remembers all who served as well as casualties. The memorial thus has no names so it is inclusive of all who contributed to the war effort. The memorial is built from 10 stone blocks and built around steel frame to enable the sculptor to work on the rock. At night the medallion is illuminated.
