About the memorial: Southern Railway 4-6-2 Light Pacific locomotive, with two rectangular brass nameplates with raised letters on a pale sky-blue background, each with the wording BATTLE OF BRITAIN CLASS in smaller lettering at the base. Each locomotive had two vitreous enamelled oval badges on a air force blue background within a gunmetal surround with the appropriate squadron crest or the badge of the Royal Air Force, where no specific crest was available. As originally built the locomotives had air-smoothed casings and the nameplate was applied above the badge, but when rebuilt without the casings the badge was placed above the nameplate mounted on the running plate. The name plate was seemingly lost with the locomotive. The Museum reference is 66/Y/1070.
