About the memorial: Set within a garden, a square paved area (having at its centre the outline of the eight-point-star of the Lancashire Police crest depicted in lighter coloured slabs) is partly surrounded by low brick walls and pillars; within that area is a central fountain incorporating a large red poppy, and a freestanding wall bearing individual plaques commemorating each of the county's police officers who have died in the line of police duty since 1840. The majority of those plaques are entirely unrelated to war, but fifteen of them indicate that the deaths in police service were linked to a war-related cause (such as an air raid etc), which renders those 15 individual plaques civilian war memorials . The inscriptions on all plaques is in black lettering.
