1914 1919/ PRO PATRIA/ ROLL OF HONOUR/ ALLESTREE PARISH CHURCH/ To the Men who have fallen during the Great European War, those who have/ served and those still serving their King and Country./ KILLED IN ACTION KILLED IN ACTION/[14 names in 2 columns with their regiments]/SERVED OR NOW SERVING/[58 names in 2 columns with their regiments]/ Dedicated to Allestree’s fallen heroes./ Staunch heroes were these, o’er whom sad hearts are weeping,/ Safe bides their fame in all men’s love and praise,/ Sacred the mounds in which their dust is sleeping,/ And sweet the memories that surround past days,/ We falter on, now hoping, now despairing,/ And hour-by-hour drag out life’s little span,/ But they have passed in one great deed of daring-/ They fought for freedom and they died for man./ DESIGNED BY J HAWTHORNE JONES ILLUMINATED BY F CARTER, DERBY
