About the memorial: The memorial is a roll call, carved into the wall of the lady chapel,The Lady chapel has a threefold dedication: To the Glory of God In Honour of the Mother of God In memory of those who gave their lives for us. The dedicatory stone is on the outside of the east wall of the chapel and records “To the fallen” 1914-19. In November 1918, the then vicar of St Stephens, the Reverend Robert Hodson, called a meeting to discuss a suitable memorial to those who gave their lives in the war. A committee made up of members of the congregation agreed a chapel for daily services would be the most beautiful and useful form of memorial. L.W Barnard was engaged as architect and plans went ahead quickly. The chapel was constructed by building out a sanctuary in the east wall of the existing transept with an arch opening into it. The foundation stone being laid on August 3rd 1919 by Mrs Harrison who donated the actual fabric of the sanctuary in memory of her two sons. The memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of Gloucester on Sunday May 9th 1920 at 3pm, and the first mass was held the following day, when the vicar blessed the gifts for the sanctuary. On either side of the arch are carved the names of members of the parish who fell in the war. The central window in the sanctuary represents the risen Christ, and was erected in memory of those from the parish who gave their lives. The statues either side of the the sanctuary window where the gift of Miss Bagnall—Oakey and represent the Blessed Virgin Mary and St John. The statue to left of the Blessed Virgin is St Michael the Archangel and not as many people think St George, and to the right of St John, by special request of the donor is St Francis of Assisi. On the North and South walls of the Sanctuary are two wooden crosses the one on the left until 1945 marked the grave of Capt Treveven in Cheltenham cemetery, the one on the right is the original wooden battlefield grave marker of Captain Brooke-Murray, He was an observer in an aircraft shot down on 16th September 1916, dying of wounds on 23rd September 1916. The cross marked his grave at the Boulogne East Cemetery between 1916 and 1923.  The windows depicting the patron saints on the South wall where originally in the sanctuary. St David and St George are a memorial to Capt S.V Trevenen M.C and his likeness is reproduced in the face of St George; the windows of St Patrick and St Andrew are a memorial to Lt L.H Rawlinson. The windows and the beautiful oil painted panel in front of the Altar are the work of Mr J Eadie Reed.
