About the memorial: An Endowed Bed, with a large metal plaque which recorded the 11 members (up to May 1918) who had fallen in the war. The pin location is accurate for where the hospital was, what became the Exhibition Hall of the Botanic Gardens (plotted from a 1923 map). In spite of it's name the hospital treated troops of all regiments, including those of Colonial Forces and some Belgian troops. One of the names is Trooper Roland (but Rowley on his birth certificate, he used Roland) Curtis who had emigrated to Australia before 1913 and served with the Australian Forces. Another name is Antonio Vereschure, who was a Trooper in the Belgian Cavalry, killed in action 27 July 1917. Whether he was in Belfast before the war or arrived as a refugee at the outbreak of war is unknown.

Anyone who donated £50 or more was offered the chance to name a bed, subscription lists were regularly reported in the Belfast newspapers. A Blanche Grierson of "Alberta", 374 Antrim Road collected almost £2,721 over the course of the war (£189,910 in 2020 equivalence), entitling her to name 54 beds. The summary list issued on 15 November 1918 showed an aggregate total raised of £99,590 (almost £7 million in 2020 equivalence). The first part of the hospital (later known as the Carson Wing) was opened on 8 January 1915. An ambulance train with 100 patients arrived from Dublin on 18 February 1915- 19 of those men were the first patients at the UVF Hospital, which had a capacity of 100 patients. On 1 October 1915 an extension (known as the Londonderry Wing) was opened with a further 150 beds. On 2 February 1917 the Limbless Hospital (known as the Abercorn Wing) was opened- a single storey, wooden building with 4 wards and a total capacity of 194 beds. In 1917 the whole hospital treated 2804 men, of whom 654 were Roman Catholic. The Hospital closed in March 1926 with an auction of the contents being held on 25 March. The majority of the buildings survived the inter war years (now being used by Queen's University)- the site not being redeveloped by the University until after WW2.
30 men are recorded by CWGC as having died at the Hospital- 1 in 1915, 3 in 1916, 3 in 1917, 4 in 1918, 6 in 1919, 12 in 1920 and 1 in 1921. Of these 1 is buried in County Antrim, 2 in County Armagh, 1 in County Derry, and 22 in Greater Belfast. 
The first known death is of Private F Mulholland (RAMC) on 5 August 1915. He is buried at Lurgan Cemetery with a recumbent CWGC headstone, not the usual style CWGC one. These are common in Northern Ireland as they do not feature the cap badge of the deceased, so in a way demilitarise them (as a nod to the difficult politics of the province).
Beyond the end of CWGC records in 1921 the last man known to have died there is Harold Bourne on 15 December 1924, aged 47. He was buried on 18 December in grave B350 of the Glenalina extension of Belfast City Cemetery,
