About the memorial: A memorial to Trooper Thomas Johnson Underwood (1875 - 1902). He was born in Glaisdale, the son of Johnson and Elizabeth Underwood. He was killed in action on 11 February 1902 At Kalkroen Krans in South Africa during the 2nd Boer War. He was a a soldier in the 75th Company, Imperial Yeomanry. He is also commemorated on a stone in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin in Whitby, Yorkshire. A Latin stone cross set on a square plinth and step. The shaft of the cross is shouldered where it meets the plinth. A carved carbine and helmet are at the foot of the cross.
