The Interpretation Notice-These curtains are old and fragile. Please do not touch./These curtains are nearly 80 years old and in very fragile condition. They are vulnerable both to the/abrasion of being touched, and to the natural oils and chemicals or dirt that we carry on our skin./The dedication board above reads: [as below]/ In 1915, during the First World War, Annie Bindon Carter worked as a volunteer at Wharncliffe War/Hospital, Middlewood, Sheffield. She taught convalescent patients the art of stencilling as a pastime. She/encountered many servicemen who had suffered the loss of limbs, and found ways to help them do/stencilling as well. From these beginnings sprang Painted Fabrics Ltd, incorporated in 1923. The company/was based in Sheffield, and gave many disabled men gainful employment in the production of/luxurious clothing and hand-crafted pieces, ranging from cushion covers to specially commissioned/wedding dresses. Commercially they also produced altar frontals and a variety of furnishings for private/houses, including curtains for Princess Mary's Boudoir on her wedding day.//From 1926, regular sales of the company's work were held in a shop on Crag Brow in Bowness.// The curtains depict two crusader-style soldiers facing each other carrying a staff bearing the motto/'Deus vult' (God wills). By 2015, nearly 80 years old, the curtains showed serious signs of their age./They were in a delicate state and in urgent need of conservation and protection.//With the support of fund-raising, a contribution from the Windermere branch of the Royal British Legion,/and individual donors, an experienced textile conservator was employed. The curtains have been cleaned,/repaired and conserved. They have been re-hung in such a way as to enable their beauty to be enjoyed.; The Screen-These curtains were made and presented to Windermere Parish Church War Memorial Chapel/ by War Disabled Craftsmen employed by Painted Fabrics Limited in appreciation of the/ support given to their/work by the residents of Windermere and district during the past ten years. June 7th 1936.
