About the memorial: An ornate red and gold painted reredos with a central life-size figure of the Risen Christ, surrounded by golden rays, with one hand upraised in blessing. There is an inscription around the figure and at the base. Each corner contains the Corps of Royal Engineers' motto. According to the DST website - "The reredos was paid for by the mysterious Railway Depot Garden Fund, money raised by troops who ran allotments during World War I, which had lain forgotten and accumulating interest in a Petersfield bank for seventeen years." This would explain why it was not dedicated until 1936.
