About the memorial: Small path through planted shrubs and one stone memorial and one metal plaque. Stone made from sandstone coping stones of demolished bridge. Garden and memorial stone on the site of a demolished memorial hall, which was built in 1956, so was presumably a WW2 memorial. The garden and stone have separate IWM Register entries but have been considered to be a single memorial by WMO criteria. Please see Comment of 18/4/2025.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

Garden plaque - THE ELMSWELL MEMORIAL GARDEN/THIS GARDEN WAS INAUGURATED BY THE COMMUNITY OF ELMSWELL ON 11TH MAY/2003 AS A PLACE FOR QUIET ENJOYMENT AND TO CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT OF THE/MEMORIAL HALL AND BOWLS GREEN WHICH OCCUPIED THE SITE BETWEEN 1956/AND 2001./ IT IS MAINTAINED BY COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS./ IT WAS PLANNED AND DEVELOPED BY THE ELMSWELL AMENITIES ASSOCIATION/WHICH OWNS THE SITE AND ADJACENT MEMORIAL LIBRARY, WITH THE HELP OF COMMUNIITY GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS, AS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR THOSE WHO DIED IN CONFLICT OF WAR AND IN THE HOPE THAT THEIR SACRIFICE WILL ADVANCE/A MORE PEACEFUL FUTURE FOR THE WORLD/IT FEATURES A MEMORIAL STONE WHICH IS CONSTRUCTED FROM THE SANDSTONE COPING STONES SALVAGED FROM THE ORIGINAL LORD'S BRIDGE WHICH HAD/SERVED THE VILLAGE SINCE 1846 AND WAS DEMOLISHED IN 2000 TO BE REPLACED BY A METAL BRIDGE./ THESE STONES STILL BEAR THE MARKS OF THE REGULAR USE BY POACHER WHO/SHARPENED THEIR KNIVES WHILST STANDING ON THE BRIDGE AS A VANTAGE POINT,/LEAVING THE INDENTATIONS OVER MANY YEARS.// Memorial stone - This garden celebrates the spirit of the Memorial Hall/and the bowls green which occupied the site/between 1956 and 2001./It was planned and developed by the Elmswell Amenities Association/with the help of community groups and individuals/as a mark of respect for those from the village/who gave their lives in past conflict of war/and in the hope that their sacrifice/ will advance a more peaceful future for the world.//
