About the memorial: The 'Light' Pacific 4-6-2 class of express locos were designed for the Southern Railway (SR) during the Second World War and built by both the SR and after nationalisation British Railways. Because this type was used widely in the south east 43 of them were named after RAF commanders, commands, airfields, squadrons, aircraft and politicians connected with the 1940 battle. 257 Squadron was built by British Railways (Southern Region) at Brighton in 1948. 257 (Burma) Squadron was one of several fighter squadrons that operated from RAF Northolt on the outskirts of London during the Battle. While based at this important Sector airfield it came under the command of Air Vice Marshal Keith Park's 11 Group headquarters at Uxbridge which looked after the air defence of southern England. The Squadron motto is Thay myay gyee shin shwe hti (Death or Glory) and its badge is of a chinthe a Burmese lion-like creature.
