About the memorial: The war memorial is located on the site of the former St Olave and St John's Church. The Church was designed by Hawksmoor and was badly damaged by bombing in late 1940. The church was subsequently closed in the 1960s and the site sold. It was redeveloped by the London City Mission for their headquarters which are built on top of the original foundations leaving part of the exterior wall surrounding the new building. The memorial is in the form of a timber Calvary atop a limestone plinth. The Calvary has a bronze figure of Christ and the inscription on the plinth is inlaid lead. Behind the Calvary are the remains of the original steps to the church. Attached to this section of wall is a plaque listing the names of the fallen. This was also undertaken using inlaid lead lettering, most of which is now missing. This plaque originally displayed the names of 105 fallen from the parish of Saint Olave and Saint John in the Great War. The memorial is grade II listed.
