About the memorial: Gates and garden of remembrance. One of the war memorials in the market town of Market Harborough, south east Leicestershire is a Garden of Remembrance. Entrance to the garden from The Square is via blue-painted wrought iron gates - central double gates with single pedestrian gates either side - set between four cast iron gateposts with spherical finials. The two central gateposts carry bronze plaques commemorating the fallen of WW2.The memorial gates came from Gopsall Hall. Gopsall Hall (1749) near Twycross Leics. having been requisitioned during the war had become ruinous afterwards and was demolished 1951. Its fine wrought iron gates were acquired by the MHUDC to provide a worthy entrance to the Memorial Gardens off the Square and close to the Great War memorial cross in the square. The Memorial Gardens were formally opened in 1954. The double gates are flanked by cast iron piers outside of which are pedestrian gates. The memorial is a pair of fine gates to the memorial Gardens. THese were created after MHUDC sold Welland House next door which it owned it retained the gardens as a public Memorial Garden for the Second World War. Access to the gardens was made by demolishing the 18C house formerly belonging to the Victorian photographer Gulliver Speight. The memorial gates came from Gopsall Hall.
