About the memorial: This is one of a group of Dorset Regiment memorials around the West Door. It is to the left of the door near the Dorset Regiment Egypt Campaign memorial. A Minor Faculty was issued in 1932 when the memorials to Lt Col William Phibbs and Captain John Compton Pyne were transferred to Sherborne from West Fordington church (Dorset History Centre PE/SH/CW 4/2/23) A short obituary of Captain Pyne was published in the Graphic, 14 January 1893, page 30: 'Captain John Compton Pyne, of the 2nd Battalion Dorset Regiment, who has been killed in the skirmish near Ambigol Wells, was born in May, 1857. He gained a scholarship at Uppingham School; passed first into Sandhurst by some two hundred marks; volunteered for service in Afghanistan, where he served in the transport department, gaining the medal and clasp for that campaign; completed the Staff College course in December, 1890, taking a high place in the final examination; joined the Egyptian Army in March, in which for the last two months, he was attached to the Intelligence Department, as well as being Adjutant of the 10th Battalion Soudanese. His activity and ability in this department may be noted from a recent remark of his commanding officer that he had 'never before had so long a notice of an intended raid.' Captain Pyne was familiar with the Arabic, Persian, and Hindustanee languages. Both in bodily physique and mental ability and training Captain Pyne was a fine type of an officer and leader of men, and had he survived a brilliant career was doubtless before him,'
