About the memorial: The memorial is sited in the middle of Whitehall in the vicinity of the Cabinet Office and Ministry of Defence. It is a dark bronze sculpture, with uniforms of the various women's services cast along the sides.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Westminster Walk: There was a campaign at the start of the 21st century for a War Memorial to be dedicated to the women who served so essentially in WWII. There were already such memorials in the US, Canada, New Zealand & Australia but not in the UK. 640,000 women served in the armed forces, 55,000 serving with guns. Women provided essential air defence, thousands were involved in the land army, they drove ambulances, worked as nurses, worked in munition & other factories, were part of the Women’s Royal Naval Service and even served behind enemy lines in the resistance movement. 9 out of 10 single women between ages of 20 & 30 were so involved. There are 17 different sets of clothing to symbolise the many different jobs undertaken by women. The lettering on the sides uses the typeface appearing on war time ration books. Scukptor: John Mills works also include the National Firefighters Memorial near St Pauls Cathedral. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Continue and take turn L through the gateway to Horse Guards Parade, turn L and find the Cadiz memorial. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
