About the memorial: The memorial obelisk is located on top of Alderman's Hill (also known as Pots and Pans Hill). The memorial is Grade II listed - see links tab for further information. There are multiple bronze plaques on all four sides to the separate villages of Saddleworth. The description 'in a garden/park/ etc. ' is wholly inadequate for this Obelisk set in open moorland on the top of the Pennines overlooking the valleys and villages below. Foundation stone laid 19/05/1923 by Mrs G.A.Schofield. The Architect was G.B.Howcroft.

As noted in 2016 the Council commissioned surveys to record and asses the condition of the monument. 
The survey produced in 2016 proposed a scope of works however none were deemed as urgent or a matter of health and safety. 
Since this report the council and specialist monument conservers have been regularly monitoring the monument to assess for further signs of damage or degradation until work programmes and budgets would allow progression of any required works.

Following 2016 there have been additional condition surveys in 2018, 2019 and 3D scans were commissioned in order to update our records with accurate models as a secure, future proofed reference.

The most recent assessment carried out in July 2022 justified the approach as negligible further damage or degradation was identified. 

The proposed strategy document produced by the external specialist carrying out the survey recommends a package of works including the repair to mortar joints, resetting and repointing of  surrounding steps where missing, reattaching the 4no WW1 plaques, collecting of displaced stones and reconstruct ha-ha wall. 
Options for securing wreathes are also being proposed to prevent any unintentional damage caused by weighing down wreathes with stones. 

This work is being scheduled and necessary permissions sought.

With regards to the condition of the plaques the sulphate corrosion has not deteriorated further in the 5 year period and should be retained. The corrosion products are generally stable and any removal would expose the bronze to more accelerated corrosion. 

The noticeable graffiti scratched into the stonework receives regular treatment to conceal and a more robust method is now being applied as previous recommended applications are being weathered away much faster than expected due to the exposed site. 

A Phase 1 habitat survey has also recently been carried out confirming we are able to proceed with the proposed works.
