About the memorial: Massive stone obelisk supported by four corner buttresses with lion couchant. Towards the top the tower branches out in the form of four ships' prows. Above them are representations of the four winds. These are surmounted by a large copper sphere symbolising the globe. 1939-1945 extension takes the form of a sunken garden to the landward side of the obelisk. Names are on 58 bronze panels. Sculpted figures depict two sailors on watch, a Royal Marine and a member of the Maritime Regiment of the Royal Artillery. The memorial was raised to Grade 1 Listing by Historic England in May 2016 in commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of Jutland. It stands in a commanding position on Plymouth Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
