About the memorial: The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway’s war memorial is a bronze tablet set in a garden of remembrance in Southwell Gardens, Highbridge. According to the account of the unveiling ceremony published in the Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser (17 May 1922), the tablet was designed by a Somerset and Dorset apprentice and made in the Highbridge workshops. It was subscribed to by the staff of the locomotive, carriage, and waggon departments. The memorial was originally located at the locomotive works (east of the current Highbridge and Burnham railway station), and was unveiled on 8th May 1922 by Sir Alan Garrett Anderson (director of the Midland Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Joint Committee), under the presidency of Sir Henry Fowler (chief mechanical engineer of the Midland Railway and locomotive superintendent of the S&D Joint Committee). The memorial was then dedicated by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt. Rev. Wynne Willson. The tablet contains the names of thirteen employees that died in the war as well as the 153 that survived. The dead seem to have been mainly based at Highbridge or Bath. Highbridge locomotive works closed at the end of 1929, although part of the site was used for maintenance until a fire in the 1950s. The war memorial was moved to Southwell Park in 1965 shortly before passenger services from Evercreech Junction to Highbridge ceased operating in March 1966. Accounts of the unveiling were published in the Bath Chronicle, 13 May 1922, p. 11, and the Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser, 17 May 1922, p. 5.
