About the memorial: The memorial is located on the west side of the A1065, one mile north of Mundford and Ickburgh, at the entrance to a camping site in a section of forest, and was the site occupied by the 7th Armoured Division when they returned from North Africa and prior to the start of the Normandy campaign.The memorial consists of a Cromwell Tank surmounted on a brick plinth. On the western wall of the plinth is a plaque dedicating the memorial to the 7th Armoured Division throughout WW2. On an adjacent notice board is information regarding the site. In 2014, to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Normandy, an additional plaque was erected to the base, facing the road.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

1939 1945 7TH ARMOURED DIVISION DESERT RATS FROM EL ALAMEIN TO BERLIN VIA NORTH AFRICA - ITALY - THETFORD FOREST - FRANCE - BELGIUM - HOLLAND THE 7TH ARMOURED DIVISION WA STATIONED IN THETFORD FOREST BETWEEN JANUARY AND MAY 1944 WHILE THEY PREPARED FOR THE INVASION OF NORMANDY. THIS WAS THE ONLY TIME THE DIVISION WAS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM IN IT'S ENTIRE EXISTANCE. THE DIVISION SAILED FROM FELIXSTOWE ON 5 JUNE 1944 WITH THE FIRST TANKS LANDING ON GOLD BEACH ON THE EVENING OF 6 JUNE 1944. MAY YOUR GLORY EVER SHINE, MAY YOUR LAURELS NEVER FADE, MAY THE MEMORY OF THIS GLORIOUS PILGRIMAGE OF WAR YOU HAVE MADE FROM ALAMEIN, VIA THE BALTIC, TO BERLIN NEVER DIE, IT IS A MARCH UNSURPASSED THROUGH ALL THE STORY OF WAR. MAY THE FATHERS LONG TELL THE CHILDREN ABOUT THIS TALE. WINSTON CHURCHILL.
