Comments (0) AN APPEAL is being made to family members of a band of ‘forgotten’ heroes to come forward. As featured in the News, builder Trevor Wood is on a personal crusade to honour the sacrifice made by 61 miners, who swapped the coal dust of Stockingford for the clinging mud of Flanders and Somme in the First World War and never returned. They all worked at the old Nuneaton Colliery in Whittleford Road, where a granite monument still stands in their memory but the brass plaque that bore their names disappeared years ago. Mr Wood wants to get the brass plaque replaced, as well as figurines that stood either side of a WWI ‘Tommy’ and a miner, and has set out on a fundraising mission. With the help of historian Eric Bollard and Chris Holland from the Heart of England branch of the Western Front Association, Mr Wood has managed to find the names of all of the soldiers who would have featured on the memorial, and the News has agreed to publish them, see below, in a bid to encourage relatives to come forward. “We are doing well on the fundraising front, lots of people have given donations and our MP, Marcus Jones, is helping to apply for funding,” he said. “What we would really like is for family members of the men to come forward as we plan to have a rededication service for the memorial once it has been completed. “It would be good to get the whole community involved in, people should be proud of Whittleford’s history, 61 men who worked in the area never came back from war and it is only right that they are remembered.” Mr Wood said that they hoped to get the monument restored, with the new plaque and additions ready for a ceremony next year: “I think it would be fitting as it will be 100 years since the first World War began,” he said. Any relatives of the 61 ‘Forgotten’ heroes should contact Mr Wood on 07969 509 365 or write to the News at 11-15 Newtown Road, Nuneaton, CV11 4HP. Nuneaton Colliery Memorial *Sgt H.
