Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Other cross
Materials:
  • Stone Limestone
Lettering: Incised
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Limestone pillar with heavily stylised four side head depicting Christ crucified. The limestone base is cuboid with chamfered top edge. Writing on the base is punctuated with runic style knots. Some web sites that mention this memorial suggest the lettering was re-incised in 2012 but the inspection on 9th May 2014 revealed heavy deterioration of the lettering, which is barely legible in places. The top section details and figures of Christ are also eroded and weathered.

West face: To the glory of God in grateful memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914 -1918. East face: Remember them O God and bring them unto glory through the sufferings and death of the captain of our salvation. After the list of names there appears the words: UNTO GOD'S GRACIOUS MERCY WE COMMIT THEM., THE LORD BLESS THEM AND KEEP THEM, MAY THE LORD LIFT UP THE LIGHT OF HIS COUNTENANCE UNTO THEM AND GIVE THEM PEACE BOTH NOW AND FOR EVERMORE, AMEN
