Submit a new condition update

War Memorials Online is looking to create a greater understanding of the condition of the 100,000 war memorials across the UK. Therefore condition updates are vital to build this picture. We really appreciate your help providing them, thank you.

From the condition information submitted War Memorials Trust can encourage custodians to take action and improve the condition of war memorials as well as target funding at those war memorials in greatest need. If you are concerned about the condition of a war memorial find out more about grants. Condition updates also highlight the amazing work being done by custodians and communities around the country and celebrates their efforts to protect and conserve our war memorial heritage.

How do I know what the condition is?

Condition levels are not always clear. The Trust uses 4 different levels Good, Fair, Poor and Very bad. The helpsheets below provide information and photographs to help you understand what each condition level is.

When submitting a condition level the Good option does not provide any space for comments. But when you submit a Fair, Poor or Very bad report you will be asked to provide more details. This is so that people can understand what your concerns are and they can be monitored in the future.

Good Condition

Well maintained, stable and secure. Inscriptions and names are readable.

Fair Condition

Reasonably well maintained, generally stable and secure but in need of a little maintenance. Inscriptions readable but some deterioration is noticeable.

Poor Condition

Significant damage or deterioration which requires work. Inscriptions and names are obscured or fading

Very Bad Condition

Unstable, hazardous and is clearly not maintained. Urgent action is required to rectify serious problem. Inscriptions and names are no longer or barely legible

Read very bad condition helpsheet

The war memorial is in Good condition but I am concerned that it is at risk from other things, what can I do?

This report relates to the condition of the war memorial. If you are concerned about its location, a building closing, other risks etc. then please return to the record and click on the yellow button ‘Report a concern’. This will enable you to provide information about your concern and will be sent to War Memorials Trust’s Conservation Team who will review the information you provide.

What happens when I submit a condition update?

Condition information will appear on the war memorial record. If the condition is reported as Poor or Very bad then War Memorials Trust receives an email and a Conservation Officer will review the information and follow up. Those war memorials reported in Good or Fair condition are not assessed.

If you are not sure on condition, particularly between Fair and Poor, you can opt to submit a lower level which will enable War Memorials Trust to review. If a Poor condition has been submitted which we feel is Fair we can add our condition update with details to explain.

If you are new to War Memorials Online, or unsure about a particularly condition then please Contact us to discuss.
