It had been noted during a routine inspection that there was some deterioration to the stonework cornice of the memorial, which resulted in parts of the cornice falling onto the floor. We called in Skillingtons to assess the damage and their report indicated that freeze-thaw action has caused some delamination and the damage to the cornice. A temporary action has been taken to brush away any loose stone that may cause injury, but with winter coming the damage can only get worse.
