The Widnes War Memorial in Victoria Park, Widnes has undergone inspection by memorial conservation specialist in April 2017 followed by inspection by Local Authority Officers in January 2018. Inspections were carried out to establish the condition of the structure and inscriptions and to for the basis of an application to WMT to fund conservation works to be carried out in 2018 (application in progress). In summary inspections had the following findings:
Structural - Good but with some cracks to mullions between lower course plaques.
Ground Condition - Good. Evidence of some movement in base paving and loss of pointing.
Inscriptions - Fair / Poor. Some inscriptions (west elevation) faded due to weathering.
Stone - Fair. One missing element, cracked and missing pointing, surface dirt and pollution, organic growth.
Metal - Fair. Deteriorated lacquer / finish. Damage to lead drainage down pipes.
Note: Schedule of proposed works has been approved by Conservation Officer and form the basis of the aforementioned funding application to WMT.
