Comments:
Following an extensive repair programme starting in March 2017 the memorial was opened as part of the Armistice Day commemorations on 11th November 2017 and is much improved. Works include the removal of all ivy from the boundary walls, repointing and replacement of missing capping stones as well as the filling in of a large gap in the north wall. The repair of the main monument including a steam clean, pointing where necessary, repainting of the copper coronet and golden cross on top as well as other metal works. Repairs and works to the inner side of the domed roof, and re-cutting of stone lettering as well as repainting of all names. The base too has been lifted and reset with poor stone having being re-carved and fitted. The main and side gates have been repaired and repainted. The reflective pool, whilst it has been repaired is waiting for its water flow to be fitted but its surroundings have all been repaired. The path network has been edged with new metal edging and paths replaced with a bound gravel. The large trees too close to the walls have been removed. The next step, as part of a Heritage Lottery and War Memorial Trust funded project, is to complete the planting within the area. The memorial remains closed until this works is complete in summer 2018.
