Comments:
The Cenotaph is in good general condition, though areas including the projecting Portland wreaths and the surmounting ‘Unknown Soldier’ are increasingly fragile as they continue to lose material due to weathering. The surface has numerous condition issues including, build-up of biological material, copper staining, caused by bronze flag holders. Iron oxide staining (on the sandstone stepped area) caused by mourners leaving mild steal within the wreaths they leave. The crescent area develops an orange staining and salt efflorescence during different times of the year. This is caused by humic acid, being drawn up from the grassed areas. The drainage of the whole site pools over towards the crescent Portland areas, and with the drainage often being blocked, this means pooled water 3cm deep, often sits stagnant in this area. The under-cut seated area, surrounding the Cenotaph has a black pollution layer forming in sheltered areas
