After the late summer rain, the traffic island is a jungle of vegetation, which conceals much of the base of the monument and the chain railings. There is rubbish dumped by the front steps. The back of the soldier's head and shoulders are badly stained with bird excrement. Many of the names are difficult to read. The panel on the right is particularly bad, with many names illegible. The plinth inscription to Mrs. Becker is also difficult to read, and impossible to see properly on account of its position and the surrounding plantlife. The relief illustrations at the top of the left and right panels are not recognisable.
