Comments:
WMT has reviewed the recent photographs and has updated the condition to Fair. We agree there are issues concerning the skyward facing World War II inscriptions however we would not recommend any conservation works at this time. Skyward facing plaques/stones are those that face up to the sky. These wear out quicker because they are directly rained upon meaning any pollution has a more direct impact. Inscriptions on the side of a plinth are more protected as the rain will hit them at an angle and the sides impacted will vary depending on the direction of the rain. This means that skyward facing lettering is likely to get damaged quicker causing a difference in appearance. WMT recommends that a photographic record of the wording is created and held by custodians and uploaded to War Memorials Online. The condition should be monitored every six months or a year. The maintenance plan should say how this will be managed recognising the different needs of the inscriptions. WMTs advice on Inscriptions may help when doing this, see the Links tab.
