Loose Parish Council have recorded areas of damage on the war memorial and having sought professional advice (from Burslem Stonemasons) are concerned that if left, these areas will suffer further deterioration (freeze/thaw in the cracks etc) causing further structural damage. Presumably this would then require more extensive (and expensive) repairs to ensure the memorial is conserved as it should be. The particular areas of defect are damage to the Portland stone plinth block and fissures within the Portland stone work. It has been advised that the mortar joints are nearing their effective life, so it has been strongly recommended that these are raked out and replaced throughout. There is deterioration of some of the lettering, particularly on one plaque that is exposed to the elements, but we feel the priority should be the structural damage first and the letters if funds allow. We are also aware that any work undertaken would require permission of the Canterbury Diocese as the memorial is in the Loose Village Cemetery belonging to All Saints Church, Loose so we have started communications with the Diocese in order to apply for a faculty.We would welcome your advice and support as to how we should proceed to ensure the memorial is protected.
