Overall the condition of the memorial is good but the weathering effects, including moss and lichen growth, put the stonework on borderline fair condition. It has been well looked after since the War Memorials Trust grant in 2014 (see link). The memorial itself and the surrounds appear to be very well tended. The area is clear of litter and tidy, with due allowance for the location in a busy market square. The surrounding railings and decorative benches and waste bin appear complete with no obvious peeling paint or damage. The stone base, shaft and bronze crest forming the memorial seem secure with no evidence of movement or cracking and there are no missing elements evident. There are no deep cracks or missing mortar from the joints but there is slight damage to the stonework. There is also slight, but not excessive, weathering with moss and lichen visible in various places, most notably at the head of the shaft, on which the bronze crest stands. The lettering is quite well defined and easily read. There is no damage caused by vandalism or graffiti. There are no access restrictions.
