Comments:
Existing condition The stonework to the Memorial is worn in places and there is dirt and algae staining which detracts from its appearance. This will exacerbate decay and make the lettering even less legible. There is also Verdigris run off from the bronze cross above which is quite pronounced. Most of the masonry pointing is missing – joints are completely open in places. Although the stonework generally is worn, it appears in an acceptable condition for the time being. There is however, a missing section of stone to the south arm of the cross on the east side, which will continue to deteriorate if left unattended due to the freeze thaw cycle. Both the carved lettering running around the top of the base, and the inscription on the vertical east face of the base is generally illegible, due to the extent of stone deterioration that has occurred. The lettering to the relief panel on the west face however with its raised numerals giving the dates of two World Wars can still be read. There is no obvious evidence of movement, subsidence or concealed ferrous metalwork within the Memorial. The bronze sword is completely green in colour due to the Verdigris patina. There has been an attempt at theft in the past, and the bottom section of the bronze sword is now bent and coming away from its fixings. Whilst the deterioration to the Memorial is largely superficial in nature, rather than structural, it would certainly benefit from a careful programme of conservation work. This would halt further deterioration and could include reinstating the now illegible inscriptions, which are an integral part of this Memorial. This would help to conserve the Memorial for the future and retain its relevance.
