Comments:
I think this memorial has slipped into the Poor category, particularly given its significance and its location within yards of the main entrance to the cathedral. The 2019 photos show significant mortar loss from the surrounding paving. The inscribed names are legible with some difficulty through the discolouration. The earlier photos show that the carving on the shaft is dark and discoloured and somewhat eroded, an impression confirmed by my viewing. It is quite difficult to make out from a distance what the carvings portray. The WMT conservation team may conclude that it is a borderline case and therefore to be reviewed later but I feel that there are enough issues for consideration, especially as the area around the cathedral entrance is currently undergoing a very expensive renovation, within which this somewhat soiled memorial will sit incongruously. .
