Comments:
Materials are stable and appear to be quite well maintained but some deterioration is visible. There is some plant growth and moss/lichen present. There are a few deep cracks and missing mortar from some joints. There are a few missing elements in the stonework but it does not appear to have been damaged by soot or pollution, although there is some weathering. Metal elements appear to be firmly attached to surface and not dented. However, many are visibly corroded (blue/green for bronze, brass and copper) and there is staining from metal elements into the stonework below. Lettering and decorative elements on stonework and metalwork are, on the whole, well defined and legible, more so on the stonework. Some names have been added or amended by direct addition of lettering or by attachment of small metal plates. There is no evident damage by vandalism or graffiti. The surrounding area is clear of litter, tidy, well maintained and associated vegetation is actively managed. Paving, steps and handrails appear to be secure. There are no access restrictions. The tablet on a stone base and surround in the grass verge to the right of the memorial is in good condition. The stone and metal sundial in the War Memorial Gardens, which is associated with the main War Memorial, is in fair condition, bordering on poor. The stonework is damaged and weathered, with some moss/lichen present. The lettering on the stonework is faded but legible. The metal plate dial is in reasonable condition but the gnomon is broken, both having been replaced by Kirkcaldy Civic Society in 1991 (the plate recording this is difficult to read).
