Comments:
The war memorial received a major overhaul in 2018. This consisted of stabilising the base using cyntec fixings. The memorial was then cleaned using a DOFF pressure system. This removed the dirt but left the natural patina resulting from age and exposure. The third phase was the repairs to the stones This involved replacing the 2 most damaged stones with new Chilmark stone, the pinning of a badly fractured stone and a small replacement patch on another, again cut from Chilmark stone. The replacement and movement of stone enabled them to be reseated as a better fit. The next phase was to repair the shuttered concrete surround. Three of the four sentry stones had already fractured off while much of the concrete surround was fragmented. The depth of concrete was increased to provide increased stability to the base. The new concrete shuttering matched the height of the original. The final phase was the repointing of the stones and repairs to the column. This was done using lime mortar over several weeks, as weather permitted. Inspection of the upper end of the column identified cracks just below the cross which gave rise to concern. It was decided to pick out to a depth of 5mm and fill the cracks with lime mortar. They would be monitored for any future expansion. Matching the colour of the repair material to the column was challenging. The work was funded through parish fund raising, substantial private donations and a generous grant from the War Memorial Trust. The work was carried out by Tom Beattie, an independent master stone mason and Albion Stonemasons Ltd; the survey report was provided by Jon Avent from Mann Williams based in Bath.
