The memorial is borderline fair to poor, but on reflection an aggregation of minor issues together makes for poor. The impending roadworks [planning application for the roundabout withdrawn 4 February 2021] gives a great opportunity to restore the memorial which has generally suffered from being so close to a very busy road. The new road scheme will effectively set it back a bit, and there are plans for a large new housing estate just north towards Pennington School, which gives an opportunity for funding through planning gain. The inscriptions are generally legible, but those on the East and West Faces and for WW2 are becoming rather weathered. There are a number of pointing issues to be addressed. There is some scuffing/weathering of the steps, which are missing chunks of stone, especially on the west elevation. There is light algal growth over much of the plinth which needs cleaning. There is also substantial cracking in the concrete base of the memorial site- hardly surprising given the traffic volumes.
Overall a significant amount of TLC is needed, now, with the roadworks coming, with a need to protect and incapsulate the memorial anyway, is the ideal chance
