There is no change in status, no progress in restoration, indeed the tower seems to be effectively ownerless. However the war memorial tablet itself can clearly be seen from the road to still be in surprisingly good and legible condition. The poor status derives from the condition of the tower. This time I saw no point in trespassing to go up the hill, which was treacherously difficult on visits in 2012, 2014 and 2016. The fact the tower is still standing is a minor miracle. The tower desperately needs a professional structural survey but without a known owner that would be hard to arrange.
The condition is well known locally and there have been a number of attempts to take action. After WW1 the location was very accessible, the tower then had floors and was open to visitors and a popular location, hence why the tablet was placed there.. To make the tablet a focus for commemoration again it may benefit by removal from the tower and placing on a plinth on the green in the centre of the village, as it has no specific relationship to the tower, but that would need someone to assume ownership- far easier said than done.
I live locally and am well aware of this intractable problem. If there was a ready solution it would have been adopted a long time ago.
