Comments:
March 2019- the WW2 names only have now weathered away to near invisibility (information from my local informant, Joe Ritson). Their restoration is tied in with the Bowers case and is complicated by the fact that there is debate as to whether the memorial has a legal custodian. Cleator Moor Town Council have assumed informal responsibility for the memorial, together with the people of Cleator Village, but that does not really extend to spending money on the memorial. All available archival documents have been checked, and local newspaper reports, and when the reconstituted memorial committee closed after WW2 responsibility fell into a void. The original committee had gone bankrupt before the memorial had been paid for, and a new committee had to be formed in the late 1920's to raise the money to pay off the debts, which then reconstituted in WW2.
