Comments:
A Condition Survey Report on Garvagh War Memorial was commissioned by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. The inspection was carried out by Stone Conservation Services Consarc Design Group on 10th December 2018. They reported that the exterior and interior of the war memorial are in poor condition and need significant remedial works to prevent further fabrics deterioration through water ingress. The inspection showed the very poor condition of the roof covering, deck and access hatch, unsafe timber floors, joists and supports at each level due to damp ingress rotting timber. External elevations also show significant deterioration of concrete elements resulting is detaching masonry and loss of original detail to the inscriptions. Some slate louvres are missing, and this has allowed bird nesting at the level of the bells. Damp ingress is also a problem to the tower and defective external mortar may also be contributing to this. Their visual inspection suggests that the bells and clock mechanism are in good condition and given that the bells and clock appear in reasonably good condition, it is essential that both external and internal remedial works are carried out as soon as possible (within 1‐2 years) to provide protection and proper access for maintenance in the future for these important elements of Garvagh War Memorial. The report by Stone Conservation Services Consarc Design Group provides a list of recommended remedial works to the exterior and interior of the war memorial and to assist with these works and application has been submitted to War Memorials Trust for funding.
