Comments:
The railings are in good condition with no signs of coming away from the base and they are securely fastened. There is slight flaking of the paint work at the base of parts of the railings. The names inscribed on the stones set into the back wall have been transcribed onto brass plaques which are fixed to the base of the war memorial. It was felt that the names on the stone plaques should be allowed to fade with time, however the brass plaques serve as a more lasting reminder. In 2017 Nailsworth TC had the surrounding wall repointed using lime mortar. Overhanging vegetation from St George’s church land was removed, and also shrubs which had grown under the back wall and were causing damage to the surrounding stone paving. The final stage of this renovation work is to replace damaged paving slabs surrounding the war memorial. This will be done using stone which has been sourced from the same quarry as the existing slabs and, due to the complexity of removing and dressing this stone, and the availability of the stone mason, this work has been delayed.
