Comments:
Obelisk set on square stone base with three tiered stone/concrete steps below. On the base of the front facing side of the obelisk is a raised wreath. The inscriptions, relating to both World Wars, are carried on what appear to be bronze plates (slight discolouration) attached to two sides of the main memorial base. All inscriptions are clearly legible. On the step below the main base is a small shield with the heading 'Addenda' bearing six names.(It should be noted that on the 6th November 2006 a ceremony took place to restore and rededicate a plaque to those who lost their lives in WW2 following the theft of the original. Source: The Northern Echo Newspaper 6/11/2006) The obelisk and mount are mainly in polished pink granite, although there also appears to be elements of unpolished granite which may be due to weathering or indeed intended. Surrounding the base of the memorial are concrete flagstones and there is then a black metal fence surrounding the memorial. There is damage to one corner of the granite on the base plinth and a small amount of vegetation growth on the memorial. There is also a need to repoint part of the stone base. However overall the memorial is considered to be in a reasonable state of repair.
