Comments:
The monument is covered in biological material and lichens. The mortar lines are lost in many areas. The stone is ‘sanding’ and spalling of the surface, and is had been saturated with water and salts without adequate sun, heat and airflow to allow it to burn off and purge moisture. This loss has also led to the masonry painted letters being pushed out of their incised recesses, and falling away. There have been new sections of stone added to the memorial. This is thought to have been done around the time of the letter addition. The stone has been poorly matched, and grey/beige as opposed to the rest of the memorial which is a warm ochre colour. I would estimate 10% of the lettering to be without paint. It should be noted that the lettering added during the installation of new stone sections is extremely poor quality
