Comments:
The stone base is weathered and cracked in places. Although the wooden cross is generally sound the surfaces at the base of the centre cross have eroded and the grain is opened and soft. There are cracks in the intersection of the centre post and the side arms. Some of the joints in the figure of Christ have widened to form cracks and splits. The wooden volutes covering the metal brackets at the base of the cross are decayed. The stability of the cross seems to depend entirely on the four metal brackets at the base keeping the structure anchored to the stone. The nuts and bolts fixing the base brackets to the central post lack a firm grip in the decayed wood of the post. The central post is not firmly held in place and leans slightly forward. The structure can be rocked a few millimetres backwards and forwards.
