Comments:
I have amended the address to delete reference to Stonebridge Gardens. The memorial is not in Stonebridge Gardens which is an enclosed public park on the opposite of Haggerston Road. Stonebridge Common, however, is a small totally unenclosed tarmac public area owned by the London Borough of Hackney. I have been able to give a much more precise address "in front of Duke of Wellington Public House, 260 Haggerston Road". After careful study of the plinth and obelisk I could not find on any side a single letter or figure of any inscription. This is the reason for my condition marking of 'poor'. The wording of the original inscription is set out within the Imperial War Museum entry on this website. That reads "Erected by the Old Boys' Club. To the Glory of God and in memory of the old boys of Haggerston-road School who fell in the Great War 1914-1918. "Greater Love hath no man than this" ". The obelisk is stable and needs no structural attention. It stands on an acceptable two step plinth and the immediate area is in good order. A passer by would not necessarily appreciate that this obelisk is a war memorial. What is perhaps now needed is a metal plate repeating the original inscription to be attached to the memorial, or a plate or notice placed on one of the short height walls surrounding the memorial. Photos are being sent to War Memorials Trust. Anthony Bradbury 16 August 2022.
