Description and Condition The Roll of Honour 1914-1919 consists of a large painted (probably in oil) and gilded canvas, approx. 6’ x 6’ independently stretched over a sub-frame (stretcher or strainer) mounted into an architectural wooden (oak) frame. The wooden sub-frame has a deliberate marbling design but appears to be somewhat discoloured with surface grime and dirt. The canvas is brittle and has a number of small damages and apertures. Overall the canvas is very fragile and physical support is recommended in the form of a lining, i.e. attachment to a secondary supporting textile. The painted surface is on the whole in reasonable condition. There are several instances of raised, flaking paint with some losses. Without treatment further loss can be expected. Consolidation of the paint is recommended. Lining as described above would help in consolidating the paint and any preparatory layers underneath. The paint surface is discoloured with accretions of surface dirt over many decades. The surface is dessicated and the colours are desaturated. Removal of surface dirt is recommended and application of a modern non-yellowing surface coating. The wooden architectural frame should be cleaned and repaired. Attachment of a back board will offer both physical and environmental protection.
